Raven woke from darkness to pain, unsure for a moment where he was. The voice calling him seemed familiar. Accented. Zack? Was this an afterlife he’d always tried not to think too hard about?
No. The voice was more mature. Not Zack, but similar. Mick.
He opened his eyes to rugby posters and a worn, tired bear on a shelf. They had gotten him back to his room. Zack’s old room.
“That’s it, son,” Mick said. “Come back to us now.”
His thoughts were sluggish, disorganized. He gathered them with a will. “How long?”
“How long were you out? More than a day. What happened?”
“Thief. Tried to use Ravensblood. I felt the pull and followed it.”
“Are you insane? Without telling any of us what you were planning? Do you have any idea how dangerous that was?”
Raven tried for a smile. “Used to dangerous." The almost-smile slipped away. “He was strong, so strong. If he masters the Ravensblood . . .”
“We’ll worry about that when we come to it,” Mick said, firmly but gently, like a man comforting a worried child. “How are you? Are you going to be all right?”
Raven focused, assessing the state of the power that fed his magic, fed his life force. He still bled magic. More slowly now, but that was not so much because he was healing as because so much of it was already gone. He was tired, so tired. Too tired to talk, and yet he made himself pull some words together to explain to Mick.
Maybe then the Aussie would let him rest.
“I called Ana, and Cass was there as well. I thought they should know what was going on.”
Raven tried to get up on one elbow, and failed to even move an inch off the bed. “You can’t let them try to come out here.”
“Ana understands, and she stopped Cass. For now. Cory, son, we may not have a choice.”
“They’ll be followed.”
“Better captured than dead.”
“That’s debatable.”
There might not be much difference, if the thief had William’s reach. Someone who had the scope to steal the Ravensblood from the Council building wouldn’t find the death of one unpopular prisoner much of a challenge.
What effect would his death have on the Ravensblood, given the link between them? Could it weaken it, shut it down forever? Or would it weaken the stone’s resistance to the usurper, make it easier for him to take control of it?
While he had never been cut out to be a martyr, neither did he consider himself a coward.
There were others to consider, too. If Cass, if Ana or Mick did something to expose their roles in helping a fugitive dark mage, the consequences would be serious and unpleasant. Too much to consider, and he hadn’t the strength to think clearly.
Struggling for a few more words, a last scrap of consciousness, he fixed Mick with a hard stare. “Don’t let them come.”
Mick put his hand on Raven’s shoulder. “The boys and I aren’t healers. We don’t have anything beyond the most basic healing magic.”
Words seemed too hard.
